Cityscape, 1990
1) What are the dominant colours in the picture? How does the selection and use of colour add to visual impact, meaning and mood in the picture? In what ways does the text in the work influence how you interpret it?
The dominant colours of this artwork features different shades of blue, they tend to look pastel. The artwork looks like a very warm busy afternoon, I feel as it’s like a busy Friday afternoon at work, someone who’s returning home from a long day of work.
2) Arkley’s suburban landscapes have variously been described as celebratory, threating, or sinister. What is your personal interpretation of the mood and meanings in Cityscape? What is it about the artwork that suggests this mood and meaning?
The warm colours inspire me to think of this artwork to being a very warm and happy afternoon. I think the colours look dull but yet some kind of solid colours are used in the artwork. The steam from the buildings kind of makes the city to look polluted, I think it’s because of the light blue colour that gives a polluted feel.
3) Many factors can contribute to the meanings viewers find in an artwork, including world events or issues. How might current concerns related to the environment or terrorism influence the meanings that viewers today find in a painting such as Cityscape?
Back in 1990's viewing the city was such a problem, it would just look like a normal city view and it wouldn't cause anyone to think of any events or issues, but after 9/11 occurred most city artworks remind viewers of the terrible tragic day for most families or friends.
4) Compare Cityscape with a view of the city or an industrial landscape by another artist. What different ideas does each work communicate and how? How does each artwork reflect the time and place it was made?
Both artworks somehow includes solid colours, they both have some kind of blurry vision to them. The Superb and Solid painting includes very bright solid colours were as Cityscape also includes solid colours but they aren’t so bright. The Superb and Solid painting looks to me like it’s a bright morning were as Cityscape looks like it’s in the afternoon.
